New processing and packaging technologies

Among the most important challenges of the food industry is the preservation, processing and packaging of foods. With the development of new production techniques, the challenge is not only found in the preparation of foods, but also in preserving them to prolong their useful life without damaging their nutritional and organoleptic characteristics.

The demand for minimally processed foods that, while being safe, maintain the nutritional characteristics, justifies the application of these new technologies for the preservation and transformation of foods. This evolution and development requires the Galician food industry to adapt itself to the new production technologies and the demands of the market.

The Ptgal workgroup "
New Processing and Packaging Technologies” pursues the goal of encouraging and facilitating the intercommunication of new ideas in science for food processing, promoting the development of joint collaborative projects among the different members of the group and strengthening the transference of new technologies to the Galician food industry.

To attain these
goals, it intends to:
  • Detect the needs existing among the workgroup companies.
  • Promote the collaboration among the companies and the different research entities to promote collaborative projects or initiatives.
  • Encourage the knowledge of the demands and capacities of R+D+i existing in the workgroup.

Examples of related topics collected in the SRA (Strategic Research Agenda):
  • Application of emerging technologies to agri-food processes.
  • Innovative processes of transformation, preservation and packaging systems.
  • Development of clean processing technologies that generate less waste and consume less energy, water, and packaging materials.
